Spider-Man 2 Review
by 007

There's been a long history of bad superhero games. Whether it be Batman, Spawn, or Superman, the right formula could never be mixed together. In 2002, Spider-Man the movie was released that coincided with the videogame. The game prevailed and proved that there is light at the end of the tunnel. This summer, the highly anticipated sequel to Spider-Man has been released along with the sequel to the game. Treyarch has excelled in developing an expansive, exciting, and action packed game that will surprise many gamers. Gamers will surely live the life of Spidey and more in Spider-Man 2.

The story so far:

Two years have passed since Peter Parker first hit the streets of New York City as the conflicted crime-fighter Spider-Man. Now he finds himself battling his most diabolical villain yet, the mechanized, multi-tentacled Doc Ock. The nefarious Doc Ock was once Dr. Otto Octavius, a brilliant nuclear physicist. But a freak accident transformed him from a timid researcher to a criminally insane megalomaniac who blames Spider-Man for his horrible transformation. Now the scientist Peter once idolized for his remarkable intellect has marked our web-slinger for death.

Gameplay:

Spider-Man 2 provides a widecity of Manhattan that's fully available to explore, much compared to that in the Grand Theft Auto series. The game follows closely to the movies plot, so I'm not going to waste much time telling you the plot. To put it short, you'll take control of Spider-Man and stop crimes and criminals before things get out of hand.

Movement around the city is made easy by web-slinging, especially since Spider-Man has unlimited webbing. The game is mainly composed of fifteen chapters that each include their own objectives as well as separate missions to take on in the city such as muggings or bank robberies. However, it's only so long before these missions become repetitive and straightforward.

When it comes down to battle, Spider-Man is fully equipped and ready to take on anything. One of Spidey's biggest assets is web-slinging, whether free roaming around the city or breaking away from enemies. Instead of attacking separately or at scheduled times, enemies will come in bunches and large amounts to make things more complicated. While Spidey can just use simple hand and leg combinations, he can also use his web-slinging abilities to move about buildings to make things more easier.

Game Controls:

Left Thumbstick: Move
Right Thumbstick: Camera
Left Trigger: Sprint
Right Trigger: Web Swing
Directional Pad: Reflexes
A Button: Jump
B Button: Center Camera
X Button: Attack/Action
Y Button: Web
Black Button: Reflexes
White Button: Center Camera

Spider-Man 2 has a control scheme that almost feels like a perfect match. There's much to get a hold of, but after getting used to the controls you'll definitely be able to get a good grasp of Spidey's abilities. There are plenty of attacking and movement options to use in the game, and whether you're running, swinging, or fighting, there's plenty of unique controls that presents a fun situation.

It won't be hard to label Spider-Man 2 as one of the best Superhero videogames to ever hit a console. Even though there's many plot comparisons to the theatrical movie, it would still be a fun experience to get a chance to watch the movie and play the game. Spider-Man 2, while a solid game, still has its flaws. The story is displayed very well, but many of the missions very become repetitive over time. When it comes down to fighting, there aren't many unique techniques and combos which can make the fighting system mediocre, but it gets the job done nevertheless.

Graphics:

Spider-Man 2 isn't going to be labeled as one of the best looking games on the Xbox, but it will be labeled as one of the best Superhero games on the Xbox. First things first, Treyarch has done a magnificent job modeling the city of Manhattan and surrounding areas. The environment is fully detailed and Spider-Man will be able to roam around it with no load times. The character models are fantastic and the animations are superb, with each character having a unique swagger in their step. The levels are really done well, but it would have been better if they were more interactive. Progressive scan input is featured and for those that have an HDTV, you're in for a real treat visually.

Audio:

The audio section of Spider-Man 2 is just as polished as the rest of the game. The soundtrack fares really well, with the background music appropriately tying in with the game. The character dialogue is surprisingly good, with each character having their own personal dialogue and celebrities such as Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst lending their voices for the game. The sound effects, from the fight sequences to the characters yelling in pain, are done extremely well. To top it all off, Spider-Man 2 features Dolby Digital 5.1, which really makes the game excel in the audio department and overall score.

Overall:

Spider-Man 2 is simply one of the best superhero games ever created. There haven't been many developers to fully capture the feel and effect of a superhero quite like Treyarch has done in Spider-Man 2. As an action game, Spider-Man 2 will likely take up fifteen hours fighting crime throughout the city of Manhattan, and that doesn't even count the fun times you'll have moving about the city exploring or taking on extra missions. Simply put, Spider-Man 2 is a wonderful superhero action experience that you just can't miss out on.
