MX Superfly Review
by 007
The Xbox has recently been the home of some stellar racing titles. Now that we have Xbox Live playing major roles in Xbox titles, more and more developers are taking part in this wonderful online experience. The racing genre has been mostly left alone for the most part when it comes to online gaming, but the future looks to change that as titles like Midnight Club Racing II and Project Gotham Racing 2 are just a few games to name that are on the horizon. Enter MX Superfly, your typical standard dirt bike racer, yet THQ decided to juice the title up from its last appearance on the Xbox giving the game partial online support as the game features downloadable content on Xbox Live. While it’s not the greatest support for a racing game, it’s still a step in the right direction.
Features:
• Downloadable content VIA Xbox Live
• 22 tracks and arenas to explore
• 11 challenging mini games
• Edit levels with the Stunt Track Editor
• New modes featured are the Freestyle and Career modes
Gameplay:
Anyone who’s played the series will know what to expect from the Ricky Carmichael series. MX Superfly will without a doubt satisfy all fans of the genre and more with another stellar title in the series. The modes added bring nothing but value and excitement to the game. There is plenty to do and a lot to get out of Superfly, but all in all the gameplay is what makes the game stand out.
The trick system is inarguably in-depth with a vast selection of air tricks and grabs. Tricks are divided up into two categories; two and three button tricks. The great significance of the trick system is that tapping, holding, or pressing the buttons will result in a different trick. For example, tapping the Y and X buttons will deliver a “Stalefish” trick. Pressing the Y and X buttons will deliver a “Saran Wrap” trick. Finally, holding the Y and X buttons will result in a “Twitch” trick.
The game features 14 pro Supercross riders that all have unique and distinct features as well as their own official bikes. You can choose your favorite rider and take them through career or freestyle mode as you attempt to bring your rider to the top of the charts.
Without question, the best part of the game is the create-your-own tracks area. Without it, the game would have suffered greatly because most of the tracks can get pretty boring. You’re able to create a track, setup your own obstacles and traps, and then test it out for yourself or challenge friends.
Graphics:
MX Superfly is nothing but a great looking game. The riders are nicely detailed from head to toe and their bikes are evenly proportioned. Environments are detailed to an extent, but could use a little more polish. It’s definitely a factor because the tracks are very expansive and the lackluster background affects the game. There can be a slowdown at times, but the game runs at a decent 30fps. Breaking MX Superfly down and comparing it to other racing titles, Superfly isn’t really that much comparable but still offers some pretty visuals.
Sound:
The most exciting part about the sound is that the customizable soundtrack option is thankfully available. Without it, the sound is pretty much dull. The in game music is pretty bad, and sometimes the game music can be off-sync. You can hear the chants and cheers from the crowds and the screaming whir from the bikes. There isn’t really that much to say about audio in a game like this because there’s not much that goes on. For what it’s worth, Dolby Digital should have been available for the game.
Overall:
MX Superfly is nothing but a mindless, fun, dirt bike racer. Multiplayer is can be weak as it’s only available for 1-2 players. The mini games are silly but provide the mindless fun were looking for in it. Career and freestyle mode will take up most of your time and are the best areas of the game. The create-a-track option does nothing but add lots of value to the game as it lets you create more tracks to keep the game fresh. MX Superfly is a must for avid fans of Supercross racing. All those not in favor of the genre might want to rent it for curiosity.
