MLB Slugfest: Loaded Review
by 007

Midway has been known to offer over the top sports titles with interesting twists. MLB Slugfest: Loaded doesn't fall far from the tree, but it has brought some new innovations to the table. Whether it's the excessive violence or the fast-paced gameplay, Slugfest isn't your traditional baseball game. There hasn't been much change since last year, but you'll find useful new features added that will prolong your gaming experience.

Features:

-Over-The-Top Baseball
-Online Multiplayer
-Downloadable Content
-720 Progressive Scan Input
-5.1 Dolby Digital

Gameplay:

Those who've followed the line of Midway sports titles over the years know what's being brought to the table, adrenaline pumped action and fast paced gameplay that's easy to pick up. Slugfest hasn't changed much from last year's installment. However, the new gameplay features and the addition of online play make Slugfest quite appealing considering the competition.

There's no doubt that Slugfest has arrived onto store shelves well into this year's baseball season, but you have to remember that Midway focuses more on arcade gameplay than simulation. The big feature that will help the game through the summer months will be its online component. The only other online competition for Slugfest this year is ESPN MLB Baseball, and gamers might find Slugfests gameplay to be more exciting and appealing.

The hitting and pitching system is different from other games. The hitting in Slugfest is very easy, but straining and difficult. While it's fairly basic to put the ball into play, putting power into your swing and getting the ball into a sweet spot is quite challenging. Getting consecutive hits with a player will cause him to go on fire, giving him boosted abilities such as hitting and running faster.

Pitching in Slugfest comes standard as well. Pitchers each contain the regular types of pitches (fastball, curveball, etc.), while there are also special trick pitches to use as well. These pitches will have unique effects to your regular pitches such as increased speed, power, direction, and so on. Most pitches are all hittable, and use can use turbo to give your pitch an extra boost.

Slugfest: Loaded comes with the usual modes of gameplay with the core of it being at the franchise mode, and of course the online multiplayer on Xbox Live. The franchise mode is pretty basic and won't deliver the depth ESPN or MVP will. You be able to conduct strategies, view stats, and trade players.

Online multiplayer is the newest and biggest addition to the series this year, and it's certainly a welcome addition. For the most part, Slugfest runs smoothly online and definitely provides an exciting experience. In comparison to ESPN MLB Baseball, Slugfest will give gamers more action and fast paced action than ESPN.

Graphics:

Compared to installments from previous years, Slugfest has improved visually but still doesn't have the flair or detail to make it stand out. The player models stand out at the most refined aspect of the game visually. Players are better detailed with their animations and facial details. Animations are impressive all around, whether it be pitching, fielding, or batting. The stadiums look decent and the crowd is poorly executed.

Audio:

The commentary is provided by Tom Kitzrow, whose been lending his voice for Midway Sports games for years. The overall commentary is satisfying and enjoyable, but it will get repetitive after some time. The sound effects are about as good as they come from a Midway sports title, with explosions, punches, and cheer all sounding very good. Slugfest supports 5.1 Dolby Digital, which only adds to the audio experience.

Overall:

MLB Slugfest: Loaded is certainly a welcomed late addition that made its way onto store shelves early this summer. While it isn't going to deliver the depth like ESPN or MVP will, it certainly delivers the action and fast paced gameplay. The addition of the enhanced pitches brings some flavor into the pitching system and the overall new aggression of Slugfest make the game very appealing. After all, Slugfest is one of the first baseball titles to be carded with a Teen rating. If you're looking for an alternative to the traditional sport of baseball, Slugfest is definitely the way to go.
