Midway Arcade Treasures Review
by 007
The history of videogames brings you down a long path to walk on. In a decade’s time, videogames have evolved from simple stick figures and two-button control schemes to lush 3D landscapes and controllers that have more buttons and contraptions than you can count on your own fingers. Midway’s Arcade Treasures is one of those few titles that bring back the fond memories of the games that were a blast to play ten years or so ago. If you’re thinking that there have been major visual upgrades, look somewhere else. Midway’s Arcade Treasures is bringing back twenty old school games in their original format, to let gamers reminisce on good times.
Features:
-24 original midway arcade games
-1-4 players
-Hundreds of hour’s worth of gameplay
-DVD content features interviews and game history
Gameplay:
There have been a handful of publishers that have made attempts at releasing past arcade games. Namco has already released their own title with vintage arcade games on the Xbox, but it just didn’t seem to make the cut. What Midway has done effectively is select a classic lineup of games that made an impact on the videogame industry, not just some randomly selected games. Many of the arcade games that are featured in Midway Arcade Treasures just happen to be some of the most intuitive games ever created.
Midway Arcade Treasures Game List:
-SpyHunter
-Defender
-Gauntlet
-Joust
-Paperboy
-Rampage
-Marble Madness
-Robotron 2084
-Smash TV
-Joust 2
-Bubbles
-RoadBlasters
-Stargate
-Blaster
-Rampart
-Sinistar
-Super Sprint
-720
-Toobin’
-KLAX
-SPLAT!
-Satan’s Hollow
-Vindicators
-Root Beer Tapper
Each game is portrayed as a unique title, and the control scheme reflects upon this. Mostly all of the games have their own simple control layout. Since these games are around a decade in age, their control schemes are limited, so not all of the Xbox game controller will be fully utilized.
Midway Arcade Treasures doesn’t specifically have any real modes of gameplay. Once you start the game up, you’ll be taken through an intro movie and then you’ll be able to select a game to play. It’s the actual games that have their unique modes of gameplay. For example, Rampart features monsters destroying buildings, towers, and causing as much destruction as possible. Spyhunter is the famous car/shooter game that has you in a car defeating your enemies with machine guns and oil slicks. Every game is individually special and a big reason why Midway Arcade Treasures is a solid title.
Included with the game is a large amount of bonus DVD content that features interviews with some of the game creators and some history on the some the games. There’s also some photo gallery’s to check out as well as some video clips. This was obviously done to up the ante in the Midway Arcade Treasures experience, but it is also wonderful to hear what the game creators have to say about some of their masterpieces.
Graphics:
There is nothing you can say about the visuals in Midway Arcade Treasures, because this is a compilation of classic games from years ago. Midway wasn’t going to take the time to enhance each and every game, because that wasn’t the point in the first place. For the most part, the visuals in each and every game get the job done. You can pretty much tell what kind of game that you’re playing and the kind of background/environment you’re viewing. Of course, there are a few games that stand out of some of the others, but there are also some games that really don’t create an effective atmosphere.
Audio:
This is virtually the same story of the visuals in Midway Arcade Treasures. The audio in the games is limitless, but Midway has made sure that all sounds that are featured in games are crisp and easy to hear. You can still see how games have evolved so much over the years in terms of audio. We now have games that feature 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound and games that are supported by THX Certified Sound. The games featured in Midway Arcade Treasures have the occasional thud, crash, or voiceover, but just about what you would expect from a classic title.
Overall:
Midway Arcade Treasures is a solid compilation of classic games that bring back the fond memories of videogames. Many older gamers can find this title a valuable experience, and for only $19.99 USD, you just can’t go wrong with that price. With 24 invigorating and exciting games to choose from, there is just so much to get out of Midway Arcade Treasures. This is easily a game to recommend to longtime videogame fans, or anyone that is interested about the videogame past.
