Kung Fu Chaos Review
by 007

While it has nothing at all to do with Kentucky Fried Chicken, the game was actually inspired by 1970’s Kung Fu movie era. Kung Fu Chaos is going to let you finally fulfill your dream of becoming a ‘70’s action star as you fight as one of nine characters available. As the camera starts recording, it’s up to you to start fighting and bring a show to the camera. Kung Fu Chaos is Microsoft’s latest attempt at a party title but will this be their 2003 sleeper hit?

Features:

-Become an action star!
-Choose from nine different and unique characters
-21 diverse levels to battle it out in
-Insane Kung Fu multiplayer mayhem
-Dolby Digital Surround Sound

Gameplay:

KFC main goal is to provide simple yet effective and addicting gameplay to gamers. On some level it succeeds as it is just nothing but a fun game to play. The game does have a creative story to it. You choose one of the selectable characters (nine in total) and go through sets from past movies looking to become the spotlight of all the characters. The game isn’t about beating your opponents until they die, but to make them lose the most amount of lives before time runs out. KFC features six different modes of gameplay but multiplayer should give you the best experience.

Fighting is a big part of KFC as you battle your opponents to see who the top fighter in front of the camera is. There are many combos and attacks to pull off on your opponents as well as taunts which play a big role. Using a taunt before attacking an opponent will earn you a star. If you can collect three stars than you’ll be able to pull of one of your characters super combos. The most important part of fighting is being about to watch out for the obstacles that may lose you a life (cardboard cut outs falling, flying objects).

Controls:

Never will controls be this easy to use and memorize:

A – Jump
B – Grab/Trip/Throw
X – Heavy Attack
Y – Light Attack
R Trigger – Block
L Trigger – Taunt
L+R Triggers – Special Attack (Must have 3 stars)

This is the simple control scheme in KFC. It’s very easy to use and combos can be done by combining some of the buttons (A, B, X, Y and triggers). Each character has their own distinct combos and special attacks so you’ll see new surprises with each character that you use.

Graphics:

Visually, Kung Fu Chaos (KFC) might need some time getting used to because its far from impressive when you first see it but as you continue to progress through the game you’ll start to realize that something was done right in this area. There are many different environments that you’ll be going through all unique in style and formation and you’ll realize them from past movies. You’ll constantly have the cinema feeling while you play KFC because it constantly brings up reminders of past films. The characters in KFC (nine of them) are designed creatively giving them a Kung Fu/1970’s style to them. KFC moves at a fast pace because there is so much action going on at the same time, so it’s difficult to appreciate the splendid visuals.

Sound:

KFC mimics other Kung Fu movies with the soundtrack featured in the game. If you’re a big fan of Kung Fu movies you’ll easily be able to tell that you’ve heard it somewhere before. KFC relies on humor and each character is equipped with many taunts so during the game character talk smack to each other. You can clearly hear all the sound effects that go on throughout the game from the “Pow’s” to the “Smacks”. The Digital Surround Sound capabilities really add to the audio score if you have one at home. With it, KFC had more life to it and you’ll certainly hear the difference.

Overall:

I’ve never been a big fan of party games and when I first heard of the game I thought it was ridiculous. After playing with it for awhile, Kung Fu Chaos had more than I expected it to have. To think of it, I’ve actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would hate it. Kung Fu Chaos is nothing but a mindless fun game that offers a lot. This is a title that has more than meets the eye and because of that it delivers.
