kill.switch Review
by 007
It seems that from out of nowhere Namco has thrown kill.switch onto the Xbox this fall. This is an intense action title that has received little to no fan base in the months up to its release date. From a glance, kill.switch offers gameplay similarities from other titles such as Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell, Freedom Fighters, and Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance but still offers its own unique style of gameplay that keeps the game new and fresh.
Gameplay:
From the start, kill.switch is your straightforward tactical shooter with an intriguing storyline. As you take control of an unnamed soldier, one of your main goals is to uncover his past. This interesting premise makes the storyline mostly nonexistent from the beginning on until to further venture into the game. One of the more important aspects of the game is the role of the neural implant, which displays mission objectives, language translation, and much more.
Missions are very linear with the way they’re set up. Aside from your objectives that you’ll have to complete, the main goal is to get from the beginning of the level to the end. However, it’s the style of gameplay that increasingly livens up missions to the max. Attacking enemies at point blank range will almost guarantee a lot of bloodshed, and will more than likely cost you a lot of damage to your health.
One of the more important ways to keep yourself safe is to constantly seek shelter behind objects that can withstand gunfire. It’s at this precise moment where many options to counter attack are available. While you’re taking cover behind objects, you’ll be able to peek out and target enemies to shoot at. If you choose to play it completely safe, you can use the blindfire option, which has you character stick his gun out and shoot blindly at enemies. The real downside to this feature is that is terribly inaccurate and rarely will you ever pick off numerous enemies.
As a shooter, kill.switch provides a full arsenal of weapons with eight different guns and four types of grenades that you’ll be able to unleash on your enemies with. All guns hold their own advantages that you’ll be able to benefit from. The gauge shotgun is a key weapon to use for close combat encounters, while the AK47 is your all-around effective gun. For deeper ranges, the MCRT-300 sniper rifle would be a wise selection.
Graphics:
What kill.switch does accomplishes visually can be equally weighed by what is does ineffectively. The animation is done extremely well, with enemies have many different reactions to single sequences. The lighting is superbly done and displays the atmosphere very effectively. The camera in kill.switch can become a concern, especially at times where is focuses in on the character so the surrounding area is difficult to get a view of. On the plus side, kill.switch supports 480 progressive scan input and 16:9 widescreen to help up the ante of your visual experience.
Sound:
The audio featured in kill.switch also offers some strong points as well as some weak ones. In in-game music can become very loud at many times during gameplay which can get extremely distracting during intense action sequences and also take away from the sound effects. The voice acting from the soldiers is done very well, along with their in-game comments. The soundtrack offers a mix of rock ballads that intensify in volume as the action picks up in pace.
Overall:
When it all boils down, kill.switch is fairly easy to pick up and play, granted you fully understand what you’re going up against. As a tactical third person shooter, there are a lot of gameplay aspects that have been done extremely well, but the games length can really take away from all the game has to offer. With just a single player experience and no replay value available, one might wonder what exactly to expect with kill.switch. If you’re in the mood this holiday season for an intense action title, don’t hesitate to give kill.switch a shot.
