Fable Preview
by 007

In Fable, you take the role of a rather youthful main character with zero renown, but big aspirations. In playing the game, you develop the character into what you want him to be, unlike most RPGs where you simply pick your character design and class before you even enter the quest. In the same way, your character's look evolves as you play, taking on a darker, more menacing look if you follow an evil path, or appearing rather more heroic if you do good.

The overall "goal" of the game is to gain notoriety; you want to be known as the hero who saved so-and-so, or who defended this-or-that, since doing good deeds will get you nowhere unless someone sees you doing them. You gain social esteem by accepting and completing missions down at the local guild, and can increase the esteem gained by boasting to the townsfolk before heading out.

The missions mentioned at this point were fairly simplistic, involving fairly minuscule things like rescuing someone's cat, defending someone's goods, or saving some damsels in distress. This sort of atomicity will make the game veryended, but leads one to wonder if there will ever be an end to the game. Is there a way to "beat" Fable, and, more importantly, is there some larger goal that you, the player, are striving toward as your character develops? These are questions that are still unanswered. Developing and shaping your character by your actions is a fantastic idea, but one wonders how long that will keep a gamer's interest if there's no higher purpose.

Graphically, the game is generally good. The surroundings are very detailed and have a very nice style to them. Character designs are similarly good, and while one would love to discuss the monster design in the game, that's rather unfortunately impossible, as only a single monster makes an appearance in the version of the game shown at E3, and it's a brief appearance at that. To be overly critical, the textures were a bit bland looking, and the waving grass looked awfully pixilated, but overall, this is a very good looking game.

Combat in Fable is very action oriented. There are no menus to wade through, no turn-based waiting, just good, down-to-earth beatings. Spells and weapons-based combat are integrated well and all managed directly from the control pad. Fighting with multiple people at a time is definitely possible, and the combat animations looked good, though admittedly few of these were being shown off.

Overall, Fable is shaping up to be a very interesting title. The boundless nature of the gameplay and character development are intriguing, but much more time must be spent with the game to tell whether it will work. The developer is hoping to have it out for the holiday season of 2003, and hopefully, by then, we'll have spent some quality time with this one, finding out whether this game is as good in execution as it sounds.
