Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball Review

Taking a break from the usual fighting routine, Team Ninja has come to the decision that the girls from DOA can do more than just fight. Enter Xtreme Beach Volleyball, a completely new concept of gaming from Team Ninja. The girls from DOA now take their game to the sand courts for a little match of volleyball. Pick yourself up, throw on some shorts, and let’s see if Team Ninja has come up with a winner.
Gameplay:
The game takes place on Zack Island, the result of Zack’s gambling winnings. The girls are brought to the island thinking there in for a nice little vacation, yet Zack has something else in mind as the girls of DOA are tricked into having a volleyball tournament on his island. The game features all the DOA girls including the latest to the series, Lisa. DOAXBV lets you take control over one character and at the same time you’ll need to find a partner a keep a strong relationship together. If not, you’ll be in search for a new partner for a long time.
Once you’re ready to hit the sand, you shouldn’t have many problems getting used to the gameplay. The camera usually focuses on its primary position and rarely moves unless you control it. DOAXBV is a 2 button game. Whenever you play a match, you’ll use the same two buttons over and over again. During your match you’ll have to use a combination of both buttons to win the match. It’s all very simple to use and in no time you’ll be enjoying yourself. Your greatest asset in DOAXBV will be your partner. Throughout your matches you’ll rely on your CPU partner to lend a hand and most of the time they come through.
Taking care of your women is of the utmost importance, as if you don’t reward your partner, you’ll find yourself looking for a new one very soon. All of the girls on the island love to be showered with gifts that are of their liking and in return they shower you with gifts if you woo them.
When you’re not playing volleyball, there are plenty of areas to explore on Zack Island. If your girl needs a little rest, head over to the pool and relax for awhile. Need something to eat or want to buy some new suits, and then head over to the different shops. Back at your hotel at night, you can visit the casino and play a wide variety of different games from blackjack to slots.
Graphics:
Hands down, DOAXBV is going to blow you away with its gorgeous visuals and animations. The game is an example of what a real Xbox title should look like. The time and effort Team Ninja put into the visuals is truly remarkable and it pays off. During gameplay, the girls move properly and in order so it doesn’t look like there all out of place as they move around on the court. Players will track the ball with their heads as they wait for the right moment to hit the ball. The girls will react realistically to contact they have with the ball; a spiked ball will send one of the girls to the ground if they make contact with the ball. Team Ninja has created a user controlled camera that lets the gamer move the camera to the angle the pleases them the most.
Sound:
DOAXBV brings together a mix of pop, rock, and dance music together as you’ll be hearing music from the Baha Men, Bob Marley, and a wide, yet strange, selection of songs. Fortunately, Team Ninja added in the custom soundtrack option which is greatly appreciated because I couldn’t stand the in-game music for more than 10 minutes. During matches, girls communicate with each other letting them know that there going to go after the ball or stay behind and cover. Mostly every girl has a unique accent that makes them stand out.
Overall:
Dead or Alive: Xtreme Beach Volleyball was a rather strange game to play because when I first got it I had no idea what to expect out of it. What I found out was that besides playing through tons of volleyball matches, the only other thing left to do was either play in the casino or check out the different shops. DOAXBV is game with solid gameplay, mouth watering visuals, but there’s nothing that stands out to make it worth while…unless your buying it for the girls.
