Dark Angel Review
by 007

What can I say? A bad game is a bad game, and Dark Angel is no exception…

The times of the world are post-apocalyptic and the location is Seattle where Max, a genetically enhanced super soldier lives out her daily life by stopping crimes unlike anyone else has done before. Your objective is to crusade I Corp, a corrupt military group and to find your genetic siblings. Along the way in your third person action title, you will have help from Logan Cale, an underground cyber-journalist. This is the story, and you will take on the role as Max, but do you really want to?

Features:

• Game story continues on from the original television series
• Use the ‘RAGE’ system to your advantage with over 50 fighting moves
• Bonus material includes interviews and a photo gallery of Jessica Alba

Gameplay:

To tell you right away, this is a title that had potential to do something, but it miserably failed. The game has a great story to it and an overall good approach to the game itself, but it seems like everything fell apart weeks before the title was sent to stores.

Max is very well developed into the character she is in the television series. She’s able to take on multiple opponents at once and with her ‘RAGE’ system, she has a vast amount of kicks, flips, and throws to attack her opponents with. The ‘RAGE’ meter is filled up when Max does a numerous amount of attacks to her opponents. What the ‘RAGE’ system does is let Max send out a devastating amount of combos that the enemy cannot counter. This itself is a great asset to Max on her quest, but that’s all folks.

What is the game compiled of you ask? Simply cheesy configured objectives and nothing else but tapping your Xbox controller non-stop because all there is to do is attack the enemies.

Max takes on some poorly designed and created bosses which seem to get old after the second one you take on. Has there been something I missed? Yes! Max can also obtain weapons, ‘attempt’ to stealth around and my most favorite…deal with the horrible enemy AI. It’s a title you wished was delayed to make some final improvements or just another title that should have been canned at the last second.

Controls:

The control scheme in Dark Angel is kept simple with the plans of being effective. Little did the developers know it would become ineffective and tremendously frustrating. It’s very simple to get a grasp of Max’s fighting techniques but the main concern is putting them all together to make effective and deadly combination attacks which can get very difficult to perform in sticky situations. There’s no real other concern for the controls in Dark Angel but the few that are noticeable can affect your game.

Graphics:

While there aren’t very many terrible technical issues in Dark Angel, it’s the overall effort which is extremely lacking in this area. The visuals are fine…literally. The problem is that their just basic/simple visuals with little flair to make them stand out. Max herself shows somewhat of a resemblance to Jessica Alba but not nearly as good as Sara Michelle Gellar has to Buffy in Buffy: The Vampire Slayer. From time to time in the game, Max will have a new outfit on, which is a nice little substitute of having to look at the same outfit throughout the entire game.

Sound:

For Dark Angel, many from the television series recorded their voice for the game, which is actually great, because many other television/game titles such as Buffy never recorded the real voices of the characters into the game. This brings the overall game up because there is some sense of officially knowing the game has some relation to the television series. The background music consists of annoying rock music which can eventually become a headache throughout the game.

Overall:

Like I said at the beginning of the review, Dark Angel is a game that started out with great potential, but it wasn’t successfully used. There are some great ideas for the game which make it interesting…a little bit, but all of the ideas weren’t fully evaluated because in the end what we’re presented with is a mess. Dark Angel is nothing but a game that wanted to keep everything simple, and they did that, but it isn’t good enough for us gamers.
