Crimson Sea Review
by 007

Those gamers who recall The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind remember that the game had great significance when it arrived on the Xbox. Morrowind was one of the first real RPG’s to grace the Xbox with its presence. Besides that, it was one of the few Xbox games that would require literally hours upon hours of playing to just get your feet wet. Koei brings us an RPG with the same elements of hard fought battles and hours upon hours of playing.

The role you play:

Gamers take control of the character Sho. He earns his living as a private detective on Grarve along with Yangqin, his sidekick. He detests when told what to do and always must be satisfied to the fullest. If convinced, he will take on the most dangerous of missions if it interests him at all. He believes that the more danger, the better.

Gameplay:

Crimson sea isn’t going to be throwing anything difficult at you. What you’re faced with is a third person action shooter with an intense storyline and long hours of gaming. In most cases you’ll have to take on tons of enemies at once while attempting to achieve your main goal, but in some situations you’ll need to protect your partners from the enemies. The most annoying aspect of the gameplay is the terrible control and camera design that is completely out of place and unresponsive.

There are many missions in the game that you’ll have to complete. There is a majority of the missions that will require you to complete in a time limit. The only problem is if you short of finishing it but a few minutes, you’ll have to start the level over again. This could cause some serious “fists through the walls.” I know I did it. The fighting system itself is nicely done. Sho will have access to a couple different styles of fighting. He can use his available weapon, his melee attacks, or neo-psionics. By collecting money throughout the game, you can upgrade you weapons to make them more effective and powerful.

Graphics:

Crimson Sea is really a fantastic looking game for the most part. The character design is what really makes the game stand out the most. The sharp textures and crisp detail make the characters shine. The game runs very smooth even at times where there are hundreds of enemies on the screen at once. Still, you won’t find any slowdown at all. The levels designed effectively to give it the mood an extra little push to make everything seem so real.

Sound:

One could say this is the one area that just falls apart. Cheesy rock music really have no business in an RPG like this and just causes pain to one’s ears. The voice action is just uneven as at times it sounds too unreal and at other times too out of sync, but it’s still decent. The fact that Dolby Digital Surround sound supports Crimson Sea is the only sign of relief gamers are going to have when listening to the game.

Overall:

While in the end Crimson Sea is a solid RPG, it just isn’t for everyone. It’s a very difficult game with disappointing controls and a poor camera design. Those two factors alone would have kept me away from the game but the fact that the games action and storyline was terrific, it kept me playing despite the problems. There is so much to like about the game but the pesky problems just pull the game down. If those issues are fixed, I wouldn’t mind seeing this game continue as a series.
