Capcom VS SNK 2EO Review
by 007

For year’s now Capcom has been re-vitalizing their fighter and presenting it to each and every new console that is released onto the market. Capcom made sure that the Xbox would receive a fighting legend but added a few extra twists to make it all worthwhile. There is no question that the Xbox Live function capabilities is what Xbox owner’s are going to be excited about the most, since Capcom has given their fighter full online support for the Xbox making a legend strong again as it becomes the first online fighting game for the Xbox.

Features:

-First online fighting title for the Xbox
-Choose from over 44 characters
-Game features 6 modes of gameplay
-Lots of customizable options

Gameplay:

Just like everything else, Capcom VS SNK 2EO doesn’t bring anything new to the table but just improves on ideas and features from previous titles. What Capcom has done doesn’t necessarily mean that the game is bad, because it’s not at all because instead of adding new ideas, options, modes, they just improved on what they have (which is what they’ve done to every title in the series).

The game features numerous modes of gameplay:

-Arcade mode
-Survival mode
-VS mode
-Training mode
-Color Edit mode
-Option mode
-Network mode

Those with Xbox Live will without a doubt get the most value out of the online play the game features. Those stuck without Xbox Live will also find great value of what’s left of the game. Survival and VS mode is your best bet of the best value without online play. One of the better areas of the game is the Color Edit mode which allows you to change the looks and colors of any of the characters you choose.

One of the newer features to the series is the “Groove System” which is a system that offers different fighting styles and techniques. There are 6 different grooves in total:

-C Groove
-A Groove
-P Groove
-S Groove
-N Groove
-K Groove

The grooves are divided up in half to represent part of the Capcom and SNK fighting systems. This is done to give more of a variety to your mode of fighting in the game. Each groove has different option and styles, so its your best bet to try them all in the training mode to get a feel for them and to see which you feel most comfortable with.

Online:

Xbox Live has been nothing but a great success over the past few months and there wasn’t a better time than to release the first ever online fighting game on the Xbox. Truly, without the online capabilities this title wouldn’t have had the success that it has. Capcom has provided an enjoyable online experience for myself and finally got right what a lot of the other developers were doing wrong…the online features. Finally, you’ll be able to play the title in the country and worldwide (Japan is currently the only other country has the title at the moment but still, it’s great!). The stats system mimics the one of Unreal Championship, the way it should always be. Capcom has made it easy to set up a game with numerous options and styles of setup to make sure that you have the best experience.

As for the online play, my experience was flawless and enjoyable. After an hour under my belt, it was obvious to see that the gameplay ran smooth and lag was nowhere to be found. The only downtime experience is when a character dies and it switches to your next one, but that happens offline too! I’ve yet to play with someone that wasn’t in the continent North America, but it’s so easy to find someone that isn’t in your country with the domestic and language settings. Overall, for the first online fighting game, it’s a hit.

Controls:

Ahh, we’ve finally gotten to the controls. Capcom VS SNK 2EO can be played under 2 different controls schemes: EO-ISM and AC-ISM. EO-ISM is designed for beginners to the series, giving them more precision controls so they can be learnt quicker. AC-ISM is designed for the hardcore fans of the series that know what it’s all about. It offers a more complicated system that it difficult to master without practice but is extremely effective. The controls in Capcom VS SNK 2EO aren’t something you’ll be able to learn within minutes, the training mode is your best bet to learn them without much hassle.

Graphics:

The game takes no approach towards realism as you can see, but it still remains effective. The game features over 44 characters which all come from the Capcom and SNK series. There hasn’t been much done to them rather than update their style and upgrade their looks.

Capcom VS SNK 2EO is a 2D fighter and because of that the visuals in the game aren’t as effective as most 3D fighters are (Dead or Alive, Mortal Kombat) because all you’re doing is moving back and forth, up and down while the background just stays the same. This time around, Capcom made multiple adjustments giving the game an animated background and some 3D elements which are better than nothing at all. There was no change to a 3D fighter, but the changes that have been done are great.

Sound:

If you’ve played this arcade game before than you can pretty much sum it all up in a few sentences. Nothing has changed in regards to sound that you didn’t hear before in the previous titles. Those cries from the characters as they throw an attack are they and bring back those memories. The background music changes from time to time, but you can hardly even hear it with everything else that’s going on. Lastly, the announcer brings some life to the audio with his little quips he’ll say during a match. It’ll refresh you to hear it after you’ve heard “Sadouken!” a few hundred times.

Overall:

Got Xbox Live?

It’s all you’ll really need in order to have fun with the game because it’s a game done right online. Don’t get me wrong, the rest of the game is really good, but for it to be great, you’ll need to experience it online. I’ve really enjoyed Capcom VS SNK 2EO. It’s probably one of the few games I’ve enjoyed since NHL 2K3 (My favorite game of all time). It offers plenty to do, customizable options, tons of characters, and online play. What more could you want from a re-vitalized fighter?
