Gameplay:
As Hawk Winter you’re going to be leading your army into war against the Muspell’s for total control of the remaining land in the planet. You have at your disposal a bag full of tricks as you are the only one who can use the Aquila Mech which can do ground and air battle. From the get-go battles are tough as you are just a small piece of a giant war taken step by step through multiple missions in the game. Throughout your missions you’ll need to complete the required objectives but also support your allies as they will sometimes require it.
Battle Engine Aquila can require some tactics at times. This is strictly not a run in and shoot everything game. Doing that in the game will get you killed very quickly. Rather than doing that or doing everything by yourself, you’ll need support and give others support in order to go on through the game. You’ll need to progress on the games skills throughout your missions and use strategy and feed on your enemy’s weaknesses and faults.
Controls:
This is probably one area of the game which is going to require putting your skills to the test. Battle Engine Aquila offers a rather more advanced scheme of controls where nearly every button does something important. The design of the control system was done rather poorly but it’s done to have everything in reach and close together. The game has numerous battle engines but they control all the same so as you go from battle engine to another, you won’t have to learn a complete set of new controls.
Graphics:
Battle Engine Aquila manages to keep it together even at the most furious of moments. At times there is so much on the screen that it can boggle your mind. The game moves at a steady framerate but has the occasional hiccups. There’s a lot of movement going on during the game and because of the steady framerate, it makes it so much easier to concentrate on what’s going on instead of worrying about slowdown. The game has a lot of strong visual areas especially during explosions but at times there can be some downright awful textures that can make the game feel awkward.
Sound:
The fact that Battle Engine Aquila features Digital Surround Sound is fantastic because the game is really made to be heard on Surround Sound. Cutscenes with voice acting can at times sound out of synch but overall it’s done very solid. The sound effects are top notch and exceed over expectations making it the effects sound like they came from a movie. From the explosions to gunfire to movement of the armies as they attack sound great and with Surround Sound it makes it unbelievable.
Overall:
Battle Engine Aquila provides nothing but solid addicting fun. The major letdown could be the visuals which can be astonishing at times but disappointing also. This is a title that sets you down right into the action and lets you do the rest. Multiplayer provides somewhat of a thrill ride as the co-operative mode really sets the game into greater depth but the fact the there’s no system link really is disappointing. What can I say, Battle Engine Aquila is a very productive and enjoyable games and one of my favorite titles to start 2003.
