ATV Quad Power Racing 2 Review
by 007

The Xbox has had its fair share of racing titles so far and the result has been very positive and the future looks to hold more of the same racing greatness in store. There is, however, more to racing on the Xbox than it seems. To be more exact there is a large amount of racing genres the Xbox has in its racing library to automobiles, F1’s, dirt bikes, jet skis, and so much more. The one area that has been avoided for sometime is the 4x4 genre mainly because the competition is very stiff. ATV Quad Power Racing 2 enters the scene as one of the few games in the genre but is looking to make a splash. Is this title heading towards the right direction or is it on a crash course with no escape?

Features:

• 15 massive tracks
• Over 20 tricks and stunts to pull off
• Physically battle it out with other riders on the track
• Ride as one of ten professional riders

Gameplay:

ATV Quad Pro Racing 2 is kept very simple in form. You race against other drivers looking to come into first place ahead of all the others. There is a little twist of some Road Rash as you are able to attack your opponents with punches or kicks to distract them or knock them off their 4x4. To increase your chances of winning there are power boosts along the track to give you some extra speed. The most significant part of the races is performing stunts and tricks during a race but unfortunately there’s few to pull off.

There are numerous modes in ATV Quad Pro Racing 2 that would completely suffice any gamer to the max. Modes include career, challenge, time trial, arcade, single race, and multiplayer. There are also many unlockable 4x4’s and characters that can only be unlocked in the career and challenge modes.

Getting into the core of the gameplay, the large number of 4x4’s offer a good selection of different techniques each 4x4 specializes in. The tracks are well developed and offer various turns, bumps, tunnels, icy/slippery areas and to top it off some unwanted misleading turns.

The trick system was suppose to add some depth and change in the racing game but the end result was weak and few tricks to pull off during the race. The main problem is that there far too easy to pull them off or at times impossible to pull off. In the end there’s no real trick that is exciting or even worthwhile.

Controls:

The partial unresponsive trick system leads on towards the inefficient and poorly designed control scheme that demands perfection rather than anything else. Pulling off tricks or knocking off an opponent desires the controls to be pushed the perfect time which is nearly impossible to pull of correctly but when done it kind of seems worth it…to some extent. The controls will definitely require some practicing done in the single race mode which could take some time since the learning curve of mastering the controls and trick system can take a little time.

Graphics:

ATV Quad Pro Racing 2 runs on an unguided train track because there is so much going for the graphics engine and at the same time it slowly starts to go six feet under. Now lets dive in to the good stuff first…the levels in which you race in are unbelievably massive and rich with detail and life from racing along the beach or through snowy mountains, the detail is there and certainly not lacking one bit alongside with sharp reflections and wonderful lighting.

Now let’s run away from the bad stuff, or read this and weep. Within these massive levels are the 4x4’s and the drivers. If you can’t see where this is heading then you will find out in a few moments. What boggles my mind is how Acclaim could put in such sloppy characters and mediocre 4x4’s in such beautiful levels. The problem is the characters have an awful mix of poor design and bad animation which doesn’t add up right.

Sound:

The game features numerous Rock/Hard Rock bands that provide the soundtrack. Without question, the music fits well into the game but really there’s limited selection and the songs are going to be repeated quickly. Fortunately, there’s the custom soundtrack option that allows you to listen to your own music instead of the games. ATV Quad Power Racing 2 really has some sparse sound effects. Other than the roar of the vehicle or the engine, there’s not much else to be heard within the game. Very poorly approached.

Overall:

ATV Quad Power Racing 2 was developed with some great ideas brought to the table but the lack of efficiency has the final product suffering. There are many things that should have been revamped or polished off more to make the title more worthwhile. The title tries hard to succeed in so many ways, but it really isn’t ready. ATV Quad Power Racing 2 has lots to offer, but it’s really not something you’d want to be laying down cold hard cash towards. It’s a title not heading directly into a crash course, but it is a step in the right direction.
