Men of Valor Interview
-By aircobra

1.) Introduce yourself and your involvement with Men of Valor.

Loel Phelps, Level Designer. I Worked closely with the six other designers to create the environments and gameplay for Men of Valor. My focus is mainly scripting and walking reference guide.

2.) Could you give us a brief description of the storyline and setting in the game?

Men of Valor follows new recruit Dean Shepard and his squad of Marines through the war-torn jungles of Southeast Asia during America's most controversial conflict. The atmosphere of the troubled 1960s filters through twelve historical missions that take the player from coastal plains of Chu Lai to the ancient city of Hue at the height of the Tet Offensive. With a unique combination of art and technology, MOV surrounds the player with the immersive, cinematic, real time scripted events and intense first person gameplay only 2015 can create.

3.) How far in development is the game at?

The Xbox version of the game is nearing completion with just a few final touches before we submit our final candidate. The PC version is reaching close to BETA, all of the enhancements have been added and now we are focusing on balancing the game for the unique features of the PC.

4.) Can you go over some of the key features Men of Valor will have?

Precise-aim, similar to some other game's "Iron sites", will allow you to aim and shoot more accurately. By pulling the left trigger the player will cradle the weapon into their shoulder and be able to aim more precisely. The recoil of the weapon will decrease and your accuracy will significantly increase. While in Precise-Aim you'll be locked in place and able to lean out from cover by using the left analog stick. You can inch out slowly or fully extend depending on how far the analog stick is moved. You will become even more accurate in this mode if you go into a crouch stance or prone. Since the game is about moving from cover area to cover area, Precise-aim will be one of your most used features.

There are two types of damage, Bleeding Damage and Instant Damage. Bleeding Damage is represented as a bright red bar in your health meter; you can bandage any bleeding damage by holding down the B button. You will bandage faster if you are not moving. To get weapons, ammo and medic packs/canteens you will have to search the corpses of the enemies and friendlies that have been killed. To search a body you hold down the Y button, if an enemy has a weapon that you want and you're at your maximum weapon capacity (4) you can swap your current weapon for his by pressing A.

Men of Valor will also feature fierce and intelligent enemy AI who will take cover, provide suppressing fire, and try to flank the player's position. The enemies will work in tandem to take the best position possible and advance. If an enemy is being overrun they will retreat to safer cover and defend. One enemy bot may be providing suppressing fire as his buddies sneak along your side and flank your comrades, or they may just toss a grenade at your feet and catch you as you scramble away. The friendlies also benefit from the AI System by exhibiting the same combat behaviors as the enemy. We've been able to put an amazing amount of detail into the AI where not only do your squad mates intelligently engage the enemy (without you having to issue any commands), they will also get wounded, will bandage their wounds just like the player would have to, and will even pickup and carry a wounded soldier and move him to safe cover to bandage him.

5.) Would you say Men of Valor is focused more on the single player campaign, multiplayer, or both?

The single-player campaign will span 4 operations consisting of 12 Operations and over 60 levels, all of which can be played Cooperatively via split-screen. The average gamer can expect to spend 20 hours playing through the single-player campaign with an unlimited amount of time available through Multiplayer over Lan or Xbox Live. 10 maps can be played over 6 game types, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, Recover the Documents and Multiplayer Mission with up to 12 people.

Both Single-player and Multi-player games have been minutely polished and balanced to provide a rich, engrossing gaming experience that the player will want to go back to time and time again.

6.) What kind of weaponry can we expect?

There are a total of 24 weapons throughout the game. From Marine weapons like the M14, M16 and M79 grenade launcher to Vietcong armaments such as the SKS, AK-47 and the RPD, most of the weapons will be available in single-player while all of the weapons will be available in the multi-player game. VC will be able to plant booby traps and place satchel charges while the Americans will have claymores that they can detonate from a distance. Each side will also have smoke grenades which they can use to mark a location where mortar and artillery strikes will fall, this provides an impressive onslaught of devastation throughout the lush environments of Vietnam.

7.) Will vehicles be able to be user controlled in Men of Valor?

The role of vehicles in Men of Valor is solely for combat support and transportation. The recent trend in video games to incorporate player controlled vehicles has caused an influx of games that rely heavily on those vehicles and not much else. Vehicle combat tends to decrease the tactical aspects of a game and turn it quickly into an arcade run-and-gun free for all where everyone wants a vehicle and if they don't get it, they'll kill whoever is in it to take it. Because Men of Valor focuses on infantry combat the foot soldiers will do most of the work, occasionally being aided by Hueys, M50A1 Ontos Anti-Tanks, M48 Patton Tanks, APCs and many other vehicles. Close quarters jungle combat was the heart and soul of Vietnam. Charlie could be a hundred yards away on the other side of field or 3 steps behind you hiding in the cover of the elephant grass. You won't know until your bleeding out calling out for your mother.

8.) Men of Valor is looking at a rating for mature audiences only. How far does the game push the rating?

Men of Valor contains mature language content and realistic violence both of which help retain the realism of Vietnam. The violence is not as excessive as some other titles have announced, but we maintain a realistic portrayal of the horrors of war while still respecting the soldiers who served and died in Vietnam. The language is fierce and profane to fit the situation, but not any more than you would experience in an R-rated film on the same subject.

9.) Does Men of Valor plan to utilize the new Xbox Live 3.0 features?

Men of Valor supports silent log in, cross title invites, and a few other of the more recent 3.0 features.
